Many of the UK’s major automotive firms have recently announced further plans to invest and grow within the industry, creating hundreds of jobs for engineers across the sector. Its never been a more exciting time to be an automotive engineer! Find out who the key players are below;
Jaguar Land Rover
Jaguar Land Rover has made the biggest investment in the UK’s automotive sector by recently announcing a huge investment totalling £600m. The investment will be used to expand both their existing sites in Castle Bromwich & Whitley to support new R&D and manufacturing operations. The need for more innovative vehicle technology has become ever more apparent in the industry with infotainment systems becoming more intelligent than ever. To keep up with this need JLR plan to double the size of its Whitley site and expand the existing Advanced Design and Development Centre, where engineers will create the firm’s next generation of high technology & ultra-low emission vehicles. As for the Castle Bromwich site, £450m will be invested to produce the highly anticipated XE, which has just recently gone into production. All this has resulted in a huge surge of job opportunities and has further secured JLR’s position as a market-leading automotive firm in the UK.
The London Taxi Company
Last month the firm behind the next generation electric green-cab announced plans to invest £250m in a new research, development and assembly plant in Coventry, creating 1,000 jobs.
The new London Taxi will require engineers to design and manufacture a ultra-low emission, electric taxi to meet the new regulations being introduced by the Mayor of London from 2018. The new plant will have the capacity to assemble up to 36,000 vehicles a year and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs, significantly increasing the employment / manufacturing sectors, as well as secure long-term economic benefits for the Midlands.
Last year Ford revealed it would pump £190m into its engine production to fund the production of a new range of low carbon 2.0 litre diesel engine, producing far less pollution than previous models. This expansion has created more jobs within Ford’s UK engineering team based within the Dagenham Engine Plant
